Health Care Alternative Spring Break (HCASB) is a UW program where students team up to travel to rural and undeserved communities all around the state of Washington to shadow medical staff and physicians, physical therapists, and dentists for a week at the medical facilities. At these facilities, students will gain experiences from observing patient-physician interaction, helping doctors diagnose patients, assisting in pharmacy, and watching biopsies. Students will shadow nurses, surgeons, cardiologists, radiology technicians, ER doctors, optometrists, dentists, physical therapists, and many other healthcare professionals. In addition, in the end of the program, each HCASB team will visit a local school to give presentations to promote higher education (HCASB, 2014).
During my time at the University of Washington, I was privilege enough to learn about various fields of therapy (physical, occupational, speech, sports) at Prosser Physical Therapy & Rehab Center, and medicine (ER, ICU, OBGYN, Radiology, Pharmacy, Medical) at Toppenish Community Hospital.
