HONORS 211:
Writing Marrakesh
Taught by Frances McCue
Spring 2011
This was a fictional piece using bits of information I've gathered through travel journals, news articles, class discussions, and documentaries about Morocco. It was fun, yet really uncomfortable writing it. Since I have never been to Morocco nor have I ever been a prostitute, I gathered information on specific sites in Morroco, traditional Moroccan foods, social and political issues, and real life experiences from prostitutes to create a world where the readers could immerse themselves and be able to follow the journey of each character.
This piece is about the struggles of Leila - a traditional, concealed Moroccan woman who sells sfenj and beghirirs in the day and transforms into a seductive prostitute by night.
