History
After immigrating to the United States, Ping Siu (my mother) has been working non-stop as a waitress in various restaurants (Panda Express, Rocking Wok, Tim's Kitchen, and Chinoise Cafe), throughout the past 20 years in order to earn enough money to provide food and shelter for her family. She was an example of someone who loved education, but was never good at it. The only skills she acquired were from the many years of working in the restaurant business. While working at Chinoise Cafe, she tried to open her own restaurant, Ping's Noodle House, in Silverdale, WA. Unfortunately, after two rough years, she had no choice but to sell the restaurant. For the next few years, she continued to work as a waitress at Chinoise Cafe.
In 2011, my mother decided to give the restaurant business a second try, but she took a gamble. She quit her job at Chinoise Cafe and started the family owned business, Ikiiki, which is currently run by my mother and two uncles. With my uncles, father, and cousin as the chefs; my siblings, aunt, cousins and I as the servers; and my mother doing everything in between, we manage to keep Ikiiki running through these past three years.
It has been a difficult journey for my family. Working at Ikiiki all day and night every Saturday has taken a toll on my studies and time with my friends, but I like to think of it as spending quality time with my mother and the family.
