Korean Culture, Immigration, & Health
Program Director: Eunjung Kim (Family & Child Nursing) Summer - Fall 2013 My Blog: http://therightway.travellerspoint.com I travelled to Korea for three weeks and learned about how the roles of media, societal norms, culture, traditions, food, and healthcare system affected the overall health of the people in Korea. I have learned how healthcare is affordable for all Korean citizens, the risks of depression and anxiety is growing in this fast paced country, and how cosmetic surgery has become a societal norm. We also compared and contrasted health-related issues between native Koreans, Koreans who have recently immigrated to the States, and Korean Americans.
Travelling to Korea has been an eye opening experience. I immersed into the Korean culture by wearing traditional hanbok, making kimchi and kimbap, and spending the entire day in a Jjimjibang (Korean sauna). I spent three weeks with a group of fabulous pre-nursing, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, and current pharmacy students. I was honored to be able to exchange and listen to different perspectives of health issues from a diverse community of healthcare professionals. |
