During SMDEP, I volunteered in free health screenings for migrant camp families and was able to shadow physicians from both private and public practices. I learned that respect for all cultures and the ability to serve through the patients’ perspective are vital in forming strong physician-patient bonds. I realized that mistrust in the healthcare system among minorities stems from the system’s cultural incompetency. Undocumented migrant camp workers distrust healthcare workers and decline annual check-ups. Thus, preventive health issues such as hypertension and diabetes are detected when it’s too late. The program gave me the opportunity to see what cultural competency looks like in practice. I also had the priviledge to form life-long friendships with some of the most wonderful future health care professionals from across the country.
